Scissor Lock performing at Medium, Rare Gallery in 2005
Scissor Lock is a project of 17-year-old Sydney multi-instrumentalist Marcus Whale, commenced midway through 2005.
Scissor Lock began with a CD-R released independently, Santa Claus In The Love Image, in October 2005, a compilation of guitar-based experiments recorded in July 2005. Following the less-than-successful recordings of some lengthy demos for a follow up, a 7-track, 56-minute album, Seven Days was written and recorded in a week as an experiment in creativity. In 2006, demos were commenced and completed for two connected EPs of more post-rock oriented material Above and Below. During this process, three tracks were produced in collaboration with Perth noise artist May 5th, 1813. These were compiled in a 25-minute EP released on French netlabel La Main Gauche. Demos for Above and Below were completed in October, the resulting sound moving through glitch-influenced electronica, loop-based a capella, ambient post-rock and heavily distorted guitar drones. The demos were shelved for the time being. In December, four loop-based improvisations, resembling scissor lock live performances, lasting around 10 minutes each, were recorded and compiled as "Loops&Errata" a free CD-R. Above and Below were released together as Above & Below in early February 2007 on Lost Children netlabel, clocking in at just over an hour. In April 2007, an album called "Now" was recorded and mixed by Adam Fulton of Kill The Zodiac and Sora Shima and subsequently set aside for a later date. In September of the same year, an untitled 3 inch CD-R was released on 3 inch, compiling a number of experiments using a Himalayan singing bowl, originally prepared for a live soundtrack to a production of MacBeth. December 2007 saw a number of shows played in Melbourne with, among others, The Boats, Seth Rees and Radiant City, as well as a live collaboration with Mousetrapreplica, which is to be released on Monstera Deliciosa in late 2008.
In August 2008, a CD-R of mostly looped based vocals, Thawing Voices is to be released on Sound&Fury, as well as a contribution to Tomorrow&Tomorrow&Tomorrow, a compilation on the same label. To the back end of the year, there will be a contribution to the passeridate 7 inch single club, also on sound&fury, a split release with Swedish musician Dag Rosenqvist, known better as Jasper TX. One day, "Now" will surface... One day...
